Sligo is the ideal spot to explore the best of Ireland’s west coast and to dip your toes in the ocean on the beautiful Enniscrone Beach. Waterfront House is an ideal base to explore the town from and offers breath-taking views over Killala Bay and Enniscrone Beach. Here are some of the best beachside activities, a stone’s throw from our luxury guest house.

Enniscrone Beach

One of the most picturesque and beautiful beaches on the entire island of Ireland, Enniscrone Beach is less than 100m from Waterfront House. Wake up with a view across the ocean you will never forget, followed by a morning stroll on this blue flag beach, enjoying the smooth golden sand between your toes. It’s an ideal place for a romantic walk, a family outing, a picnic with friends or to enjoy a dip in the Atlantic Ocean. Enniscrone is a safe, clean beach stretching for an amazing 5km along the Irish coastline.

Surfing in Enniscrone

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a daredevil or want to try something new on your trip to Sligo, we recommend a surfing lesson on Enniscrone Beach. You have a choice of two surfing schools in the town, North West Surf School and 7th Wave Surf School. Both offer lessons from fully qualified and insured instructors with a distinct, welcoming Sligo charm. They offer lessons for all types of surfers, from complete novices to experienced riders wanting to perfect a move. Best of all, they provide everything you need including boards, wetsuits and safety equipment so you don’t need to think about anything apart from enjoying your lesson. Enniscrone Beach is an idyllic location for surfing holidays in Ireland and both schools are open year-round for lessons, depending on weather and wave conditions.

Killala Bay

Another excellent place to explore on your visit to Sligo is Killala Bay, along the west coast between County Mayo and County Sligo. This unspoiled beach and the surrounding area is not only beautiful but is steeped in Irish History for the part it played in the 1798 rebellion. The area is ideal for lovers of the true West of Ireland, who love to learn more about the lesser-known history of the country or have an interest in archaeology with some fantastic historic sites to visit. You will often find seals resting or playing in Killala Bay or nearby Bartra Island. This picturesque seaside village is also ideal for an afternoon of shore or beach angling or a day of deep-sea angling.

Kilcullen Seaweed Baths

If you love the idea of immersing yourself in cleansing seawater, but can’t bring yourself to dip in the freezing ocean, a seaweed bath is perfect for you. Harnessing the best qualities of the sea and combining them with sweet natural scents of expensive essential oils and comfortable warmth, a seaweed bath gives you the best of both worlds. Kilcullen Seaweed Baths opened in 1912, originally built used by the Kilcullen Family. Its then-modern Edwardian design is now part of its charm. It is traditional along the west coast to bathe in hot water and seaweed, a tradition that Kilcullen are proud to carry on. Aside from the obvious luxury, the high concentration of iodine in seawater also has medicinal properties including deep relaxation and relief from the painful symptoms of rheumatism and arthritis.
